Learning Resource Centre

Opening Times

The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) is open Monday to Friday, 8.00 – 4.00pm. Students are welcome during break and lunch-times and before and after school.

The LRC provides a friendly, supportive environment where the Learning Resources Manager is on hand to assist students. There is space suitable for group study, individual private study, quiet reading and class visits.

Students have access to fiction and non-fiction books, DVDs, journal articles, computers and printing facilities. All students become members of the LRC and are welcome to visit to read, borrow books and complete and print out work. There is no charge to students for using the facilities.

Students are allowed to borrow up to 3 items. Most books are available for a 2 week loan period. Items can be renewed if students have not yet finished with them and need to have them for a longer period.

Reading for Pleasure

The LRC encourages all students to enjoy their reading and to read for pleasure. Besides providing a wide range of new and popular fiction and non-fiction books, the LRC arranges events and activities throughout the school year. These include:

· Author Visits

· ‘Book buzz’ scheme

· Book Fairs

· Book Week

· Competitions

· Carnegie Book Awards Shadowing

· Derbyshire Literary Challenge

· Derbyshire Schools Book Award

· Spelling Bee

· World Book Day

To continue to promote and support Reading for Pleasure with our students the librarians have devised a new service to take the library to the student year group bubbles – the Pop-up Library!  This is a collection of books from the LRC, chosen specifically for that year group. The Pop-up library visits each year group on a different day of the week at break-time, and gives students the opportunity to browse and select books to borrow. We have ensured the service is as covid-secure as possible by providing sanitiser, encouraging students to browse with eyes only, quarantining returned books and keeping books in year group collections.
This service is in addition to the ‘Book and Borrow’ service where students can choose, request and reserve books from the LRC’s online catalogue, ‘Eclipse’. Eclipse is available via the school website. Alternatively students can email the library ([email protected]) to request books. The books are delivered to and collected from the student’s classroom.
The Pop-up Library visited the year 7 bubble for the first time this week at break-time – there was a buzz around the trolley, with 10 students loaning books for the first time. Prior to break-time the tutors were emailed to let the students know the trolley would be there. It is hoped that with a consistent approach each week the number of students loaning books will increase.

Book and Borrow

New for this year! Students can complete a manual form to request books or alternatively they can access the online library catalogue, Eclipse to reserve books. Librarians will visit the English classrooms weekly to deliver and collect books and forms. Book and Borrow forms are available in English classrooms and also to print from the students school email account. The Eclipse shortcut is on the desktop and also the school website.
