Assessment and Reporting

Assessment is an integral part of the learning and teaching process at OIEA. Assessment allows students, parents and teachers to see what our young people know, understand and are able to do.

Assessment gives teachers information to track progress, allowing them to plan for the next steps in a child’s education and put in support and interventions where needed.

Assessments also provide opportunities for teachers to provide feedback and for students to be able to act upon this to further improve their knowledge, understanding and skills.

At OIEA, key assessments are organised into ‘Assessment Windows’. These are four week blocks, where the first two weeks are spent preparing for the assessments – including with homework tasks – and then the assessments happen within the following two weeks.

The schedule for assessments are set so that there is current and high quality information available to inform Progress Checks.

Assessments are taken under four different sets of conditions:

Assessments are set by the subject leaders. They are shared with colleagues before the start of the assessment window. Assessments will test students on a range of content and skills learnt in the preceding weeks. They will be completed under full exam conditions in class. Students are allowed reference to their books and/or revision notes. Usually teachers will provide guidance on how to structure their responses. Questions need not mirror the structure of GCSE/BTEC exams.

Assessments are set by the subject leaders. They are shared with colleagues before the start of the assessment window. Assessments will test students on a range of content and skills learnt in the preceding weeks. They will be completed under full exam conditions in class. Students are allowed reference to their revision notes but not their books. Usually teachers will provide guidance on how to structure their responses. Where possible questions will mirror the structure of GCSE/BTEC exams.

Assessments are set by the subject leader. They are shared with colleagues before the start of the assessment window. Assessments will test students on a range of content and skills learnt in the preceding weeks. They will be completed under full exam conditions in class. Students are not allowed reference to their revision notes or books. It might be appropriate to provide pre-prelease materials if they are used in the GCSE/BTEC exams. For most students, teachers will not guidance on how to structure their responses during the assessment, however this may still be appropriate for some SEND students. Questions will normally mirror the structure of GCSE/BTEC exams.

Assessments are set by the subject leader. They are shared with colleagues at the start of the assessment weeks (i.e. after the revision period is over). Assessments will test students on a range of content and skills learnt over the year. They will mirror the style of GCSE/BTEC exams or be past exam papers. With the exception of Year 9, these will be undertaken in exam conditions as part of the mock examinations process.
