The Red Zone
What is it?
A sustained period of independent practice every lesson where students work in complete silence on the most challenging task of the lesson.
Key Features of the ‘Red Zone’
- There is a ‘Red zone ‘ task every lesson.
- Students work in complete silence as it helps concentration. (There may be occasions in practical subjects such as Drama, Music and PE where the task requires students to speak).
- The task will make students think hard.
- ‘Memory is the residue of thought’: The harder students are made to think, the more it helps them to store it in their memory.
- The tasks are likely to focus on students applying and transferring their knowledge and making connections with previously learnt content. This helps them to store it in their long-term memory.
