Homework

Homework at OIEA

Homework is a vital part of learning at OIEA. It helps students embed knowledge, develop independence, and build good study habits. Last year, our students completed over 45,000 pieces of homework, the highest level we’ve seen, and this has had a clear impact on progress.

Research from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) shows that homework can add up to five months of additional progress when it is set effectively. This is why we place such importance on consistency and completion.

This year, homework will continue to be a focus:

  • Core subjects (KS3/4): Homework set regularly through Sparx (except English at KS4, which focuses on set texts).
  • Other subjects: Homework may be set where appropriate to support learning (e.g. preparing for performances or assessments).
  • Homework completion contributes to student rankings and informs interventions, ensuring consistency and accountability.

By working together, staff, students, and families can make sure homework continues to strengthen learning and outcomes.
