The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) is open Monday to Friday, 8.00 – 4.00pm. Students are welcome during break and lunch-times and after school.
The LRC provides a friendly, supportive environment where the Learning Resources Manager is on hand to assist students. There is space suitable for group study, individual private study, quiet reading and class visits.
Students have access to fiction and non-fiction books, DVDs, journal articles, computers and printing facilities. All students become members of the LRC and are welcome to visit to read, borrow books and complete and print out work. There is no charge to students for using the facilities.
Students are allowed to borrow up to 3 items. Most books are available for a 2 week loan period. Items can be renewed if students have not yet finished with them and need to have them for a longer period.
Reading for Pleasure
The LRC encourages all students to enjoy their reading and to read for pleasure. Besides providing a wide range of new and popular fiction and non-fiction books, the LRC arranges events and activities throughout the school year. These include:
- Author Visits
- ‘Book buzz’ scheme
- Book Fairs
- Book Week
- Carnegie Book Awards Shadowing
- Derbyshire Literary Challenge
- Derbyshire Schools Book Award
- Spelling Bee
- World Book Day
Accelerated Reader is a reading programme that students at OIEA take part in. It is designed for independent reading – helping students read at their own level and pace. Most of the fiction books, and some non-fiction books, in the LRC are part of the AR programme. Once a book has been read, a quiz is taken to monitor students’ progress. AR classes are held in the LRC during English lessons.
Students and parents can log onto accelerated reader and see how many books they have read using Accelerated Reader Home Connect : http://Ukhosted42.renlearn.co.uk/1895554/HomeConnect
Student username and password is given to them in school and written in their planner.
After School Clubs
The library is open every day after school for students to complete their homework and make use of the computers and printers. The LRC staff are available to help students if needed.
Magic the Gathering Club
This strategic card-game club takes place in the LRC after school on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
